Philosophy and Operations

The Excess Casualty Division at Alterra Specialty is staffed with seasoned underwriters who understand that creativity and response time are key. We recognize our relationship with you is dependent on bringing a sense of urgency to completing your deal.

Our underwriters have a demonstrated expertise and a broad appetite in construction and service classes, project business, products risks, property owners, and institutional accounts, among others. We are not class underwriters. We look for ways to make your deal work, and we're opportunistic in our approach.

We offer admitted paper (Alterra America Insurance Company) in most states and non-admitted paper (Alterra Excess & Surplus Insurance Company) country-wide. Both true excess liability, and umbrella forms are available. Alterra is rated A XV by A. M. Best.

We work with selectively appointed wholesale brokers throughout the U.S.

Capacity Utilization

• Excess capacity is up to $25,000,000 for appropriate excess attachment points.
• Lead limits up to $10,000,000.

Underwriting Information: We can do the best job for you with:

• Cover letter summarizing the risk and telling us how you want us to help.
• Quote need-by date.
• Completed ACORD 125 plus appropriate sub-sections for CGL and Umbrella/Excess.
• Applicable supplemental questionnaires or applications (contractors, project, etc.).
• Loss history: 5 years currently-valued loss experience, with detail on large ($25,000+) losses.
